Bird Protection Quebec's Field Trip Report - Saturday May 21st

Eighteen birders came out for our earlier-than-usual field trip to the Westmount Summit. Since many weren't yet "birded out" after the tour of the Summit (birders in May, what can you do?!), we carried on to the Mount Royal Cemetery. Weather cooperated, with no rain probably for the first time in a week, and comfortable temperatures.

The day started off well with a sighting of an Indigo Bunting before we had even left the parking area! Here is our complete list of 49 species:

Turkey Vulture (4), Cooper's Hawk (1), Hawk species (1), Ring-billed Gull (2), Chimney Swift (5), Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (1), Downy Woodpecker (1), Hairy Woodpecker (1), Northern Flicker (1), Pileated Woodpecker (1), Yellow-bellied Flycatcher (2), Least Flycatcher (1), Great Crested Flycatcher (6), Blue-headed Vireo (2), Philadelphia Vireo (2), Red-eyed Vireo (8), Blue Jay (4), American Crow (20), Common Raven (1), Black-capped Chickadee (6), Red-breasted Nuthatch (1), White-breasted Nuthatch (3), Veery (1), American Robin (12), Gray Catbird (6), Brown Thrasher (1), European Starling (40), Cedar Waxwing (4), Northern Parula (1), Yellow Warbler (1), Chestnut-sided Warbler (3), Magnolia Warbler (1), Black-throated Blue Warbler (4), Yellow-rumped Warbler (1), Black-throated Green Warbler (3), Black-and-white Warbler (3), American Redstart (12), Ovenbird (2), Common Yellowthroat (1), Chipping Sparrow (12), Song Sparrow (6), White-crowned Sparrow (1), Northern Cardinal (2), Rose-breasted Grosbeak (1),

After we wrapped up around 12:30, Vivek Govind Kumar stayed at the cemetery for another couple of hours and sent the following additional sightings:

Red-shouldered Hawk -1 (being chased by crows), Peregrine Falcon-1, Ruby-throated Hummingbird -1 (in the small wood between Camillien Houde and Avenue Mont Royal), Pileated Woodpecker -1 (additional numbers), Eastern Phoebe -2, Eastern Kingbird -1, Red-breasted Nuthatch -1 (additional numbers), House Wren -2, Ruby-crowned Kinglet -3, Eastern Bluebird -2, Swainson's Thrush -1 (in the small wood between Camillien Houde and Avenue Mont Royal), Tennessee Warbler -1, Nashville Warbler -2, Yellow-rumped Warbler -5 (additional numbers), Blackburnian Warbler -1, American Redstart -8 (additional numbers), Black-throated Green Warbler -5 (additional numbers), Black-throated Blue Warbler -4 (additional numbers), Scarlet Tanager -2, White-throated Sparrow -2, White-crowned Sparrow -1 (additional numbers), Rose-breasted Grosbeak -3 males, Baltimore Oriole -1, Indigo Bunting - 4 (additional numbers - including one that was fighting a House Sparrow outside the crematorium!!), House Sparrow -3

Thanks to all who came out, sorry for delay in posting the list but it's been a busy birding weekend, Sheldon and I were out bright and early (3 am !) Sunday too to do our Baillie Birdathon. Not much sleep this weekend but lots of great birding! - Darlene
