Bird Protection Qujebec "Field Trip Report" Saturday May 3

Lac St-Francois National Reserve, Dundee

What started out looking like we might get rained on turned out to be just a cloudy, overcast day, with a couple of sunny breaks. It was obvious to see the proof of a delayed spring as just about all the trees were completely bare of any buds or emerging leaves.

14 birders participated in today's field trip and succeeded in finding a total of 51 species. It was very quiet in some areas today, particularly on the wooded trail section of the reserve close to the U.S. border. Still we were very pleased to get good looks at a nesting pair of Sandhill Cranes on the Great Egret Walk and after some patience, a nice look at an Eastern Towhee at the intersection of Highway 132 and Watson. Three additional species were seen by Doug Fisher prior to the group arriving at the reserve. They were Northern Pintail, Green-winged Teal and Belted Kingfisher. - Sheldon Harvey
